7 Questions You Must Ask When Buying A Steel Kit Shed

Don’t purchase your next shed without first answering these key questions

Whether it’s size, shape, colour or configuration, home and business owners are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a new shed.

At times it can seem almost overwhelming. Purchasing a new shed is a big, long-term decision.

But don’t stress: if you’re in the market for a new shed and storage solution, we’ve compiled 7 key questions that will help you find the perfect product:

What will I use this shed for?

It seems like the obvious question, but you’d be surprised by how many people purchase a shed without being clear on their actual storage needs. Will it be machinery only? Or do you need space for grain, produce and fertiliser? How about shelter for your livestock, or an associated workshop?

Clearly defining the purpose of your shed is essential in selecting the right one for you.

Do I need a Council permit?

It’s always best to check with your local Council to clarify if any permits are required for your shed because rules vary from State to State and even amongst individual Councils.

If you do require Council approval each of our products comes with a free ‘Drafting Outline’ ready to submit should you need to apply for a permit.

Will I Get A Warranty?

Any shed manufacturer should have the confidence to stand behind their products. Look for a company that will offer a warranty that covers key components so they can be easily replaced in case of any problems. Note: Keep the receipt for your shed purchase and the warranty in your records for future reference.

How Much Am I Willing To Spend?

It’s common sense to go into any significant purchase with a clear budget in mind. However, using the price tag alone as your main criteria risks overlooking other important factors, such as quality, durability and whether the shed is region-appropriate.

A new shed is a long-term investment and its various benefits should be weighed up against the cost.

It’s also important to incorporate other work that might be required as part of your shed purchase, including earthworks, clearing and assembly.

Does the company have relevant certifications?

Does the company provide a valid builder’s registration number and registered with the relevant Building Commissions? Does the Company provide evidence of Engineering Certification?

These are important questions and the answers will make sure you are purchasing a product that has met stringent quality control standards.

What type of shed is suitable for my region?

The needs of a coastal property will differ to those in an arid inland area. Sheds can be tailored to suit any climate, so it’s important that you’re choosing a structure and finishings that will be able to tolerate the weather extremes of your region.

How do I organise erection and assembly?

As the name suggests, a DIY steel kit shed can be easily assembled and put together on your property. But if you need a hand, your shed company should be able to put you in touch with highly experienced teams ready to help you assemble your shed.
