Are there hidden costs when buying a shed?

What to look out for and what you need to be aware of before you purchase.

A shed for your farm or Industrial business isn’t a little purchase – it’s a major investment for your future.

So it’s natural to have a calculated maximum cost in mind when it comes to lashing out on your brand new structure. But like any big buy, the most rigid budgets can quickly spiral out of control if you’re not careful.

We have compiled some useful tips on how to keep that budget in check - not just during your time of purchase, but for the long term sustainability of your brand new shed.

Consider the quality when comparing the cost

If there’s one piece of advice you take away from reading this article, here it is: Don’t skimp on your shed.

While a big purchase comes with a big price tag, there’s a reason why the dollars do make a difference when deciding on the right shed for you.

As you scroll through Allied Sheds’ classic range of sheds, keep in mind that the purchase of your brand new shed is not the type of investment that you want to score a bargain basement deal on.

Cheaper products on the market might look tempting, but if you opt to go down this path you need to be aware that your financial investment may backfire in the long run. Like most things, the quality is usually reflective in the price tag!

When it comes to sheds, size does matter

One of the most common regrets we hear from customers is that they didn’t have the foresight to overcompensate on the size of the shed when they first made their purchase.

While a small shed might sound like it will save you money in comparison to some of the larger options, consider your needs first and what the shed will be utilised for – both now and well into the future.

By ensuring that your shed is sizable enough the first time around, it will save you having to repurchase an additional shed for storage, or even replace the shed with a bigger structure down the track.

Besides, even if your shed is too big for your needs right now, having a little extra room to move is a good problem to have.

Be in the know, before you hit ‘go’

Purchasing a shed is something that you want to do your research on before you close the deal.

By knowing exactly what you’re after at the start of the process, you can allocate your budget into what you need first and foremost, rather than what you want.

Do you really need that extra ventilation and skylights, or would it just be a nice feature to have?

Like everything, you may have to compromise in order to stick within your budget, but make sure you don’t miss out on your non-negotiables.

Another thing you need to be aware of is your bang for buck when purchasing a kit shed. A kit shed is exactly as its name reflects – it’s a kit. Other costs such as planning approvals, earthworks and installation costs are all additional, so make sure you budget for these expenses from the start.

While the financial side of a large purchase can be stressful, keep in mind that purchasing a new shed is also a very exciting time and something that will bring your farm or business great enjoyment and use in the years to come.

As long as you plan wisely and purchase the right shed for your needs with all things considered, you can have your brand new shed – all while keeping your costs under control.
