Should I DIY or get an Installer for my Shed?

To try D.I.Y or hire an installer – that is the question! Find out why it’s wise to bring in the big guns and invest an expert to install your new shed.

With television glorifying the rise of home renovation and improvement shows, it’s easy to believe that constructing the perfect shed for your business, farm or man cave might be easier tackled on your own.

Steel shed kits are the perfect storage solution for your valuable assets but the million-dollar question is:

“Can I install the shed myself or should I hire a professional?”

While shed assembly can be relatively easy, it’s not for everyone.

While some may argue that doing it yourself won’t require as a many hands for the work and you might feel a sense of accomplishment once the shed is erected, the number of issues which could potentially occur is enough to build a sizeable structure itself!

So if you’re weighing up whether to go solo or call in the experts to build your new shed, carefully consider the following before you make your decision.

Why shouldn’t I try D.I.Y?

  • You won’t have a helping hand.
Have you ever heard the saying: ‘Many hands make light work’? There’s a reason it’s so well-known. While setting up your shed by yourself might sound like a challenge, once you begin the process you might soon be wishing you had a team of helpers. Hiring professional installers will give you the peace of mind that your new shed is being structurally set up properly – and the burden of the labor will spread across a team, rather than you carrying all the weight.
  • Your patience will be tested.
Do you have the time and organizational skills required to go solo? In today’s high paced world, time is some times more valuable than money. Can you afford to take time off work or as you in retirement and wanting to work on a project?

The equation is simple, really – imagine the time you’ll save by hiring professional installers, as opposed to trying to set up the entire shed by yourself! While you might think you’ll be able to get the job done in a hurry, the installation of a new shed is not a process that you want to rush through. You can also rest assured that once the installation is underway, there shouldn’t be any delays in the process, whereas if you try to D.I.Y you might have to stop and start and even re-do parts of the install in order to get it right.
  • Some things are better left to the experts.
Ask yourself whether you honestly have the right experience to be building a shed by yourself as you’ll need to call on some building skills to assemble your new shed kit. If you have zero experience than maybe you should seek some help from a professional. Attempting to install a shed on your own might save you a few dollars, but if something goes structurally wrong with the shed during the install - or in the future - you’ll wonder whether it was worth skipping the expert installation.
  • Are you equipped for the work?
To build a shed you need certain tools and equipment to get the job done right. It can be expensive and hiring larger pieces of equipment can be more expensive than just deciding to head to down to your local Bunnings. Ensure the tools purchased (should you go down this path) will be used again and not just a waste of money. Shed erectors have the tools and equipment necessary to complete the installation safely and efficiently.

Still think you’ve got what it takes to try D.I.Y? If you’ve gone through the above list and think you can handle assembling a shed kit on your own, good luck. Alternatively, you have the option of plenty of shed erectors in your area waiting to help – installing a shed on your own is not for everyone!
